Back in October, I presented at the Original Lilly International Conference on College Teaching held at Miami University of Ohio. I presented on a pedagogical technique I devised which I call Class-as-Crew. I use this for teaching a film class of mine called Lighting and Field Production. I started teaching that course a couple of years ago in the Spring semester. In this class, students shoot a film with me during class time. They rotate through various crew positions during the six weeks of shooting, giving them the opportunity to experience each crew position while learning the protocols and responsibilities associated with that position. The presentation was well received and as part of that presentation I made a video that captured the essence of the course and my technique.
